MOULTON Panthers U9 |
L 3 - 1 |
The last game of the season away in the sunshine at Moulton and our last 6v6 match. Matches between these sides are always close and this one was no exception. Burwell started really well and produced some excellent passing football between the front three of Harry Howe, Adam Sutton and Araan Derakhshan, only to be denied time and again by the Moulton keeper, who was excellent throughout, or a last ditch blocking tackle. As such it was completely against the run of play when Moulton took the lead just before the end of the period when a long throw in deceived everyone and snuck in at the near post.
The second period continued in the much the same vein but was equally fruitless. Finally the deserved equaliser came after 31 minutes when Araan fired a low free-kick into the bottom corner. Unfortunately, as has happened on many occasions this season, as the Tigers pressed for a winner, an incisive Moulton breakaway gave them the lead. Once again Burwell piled on the pressure and were denied a penalty when the referee failed to see a handball in the area. This decision was then compounded when Moulton scored again with another fast break.
So we ended the year with another exciting game, against a Moulton team that defended very well and took their chances when they came. Some of the passing football we produced was very promising and bodes well for the future.

SAWSTON UNITED |
L 2 - 5 |
So to the last home game of the season and the return match against a powerful Sawston team, who were still competing to win the division. Sawston started very strongly with a clear tactic of hitting long balls out to either flank, with their forwards then cutting in towards goal. This worked twice in the opening 8 minutes which saw Tigers struggle to contain them.
In the second period, however, Burwell started to get into the game and Irvin Galbraith struck the bar with a cracking long range shot, before a through ball by Nathan Atkinson found Adam Powell, who kept his composure to fire home. Against the run of play Sawston extended their lead again but this was reduced to 2-3 when a free-kick was crossed by Araan Derakhshan for Warren How to head home at the far post.
At this point it was all to play for but two more goals against in the 3rd period in the space of a minute killed the game off. The first of these was headed in from a well taken corner. Tigers continued to battle and were extremely unfortunate again when both Nathan and Araan hit the crossbar before the end of the match. This was Tigers heaviest defeat of the season against a very strong team and yet once again the team played well in spells and they can consider themselves very unlucky at the margin of the defeat.

Newmarket Town U9C |
D 2 - 2 |
Newmarket C narrowly won the first meeting between the sides and are above Tigers in the league. They are also the top scorers in the division so this was always going to be tough but Burwell were unlucky not to take all three points having edged a tight match.
Tigers took the lead after only 3 minutes when top scorer Araan Derakhshan thumped a low drive into the bottom corner of the net. Shortly after Newmarket equalised with a well taken goal after a long throw but Burwell were on top and deservedly restored their lead after 10 minutes. Yet again it was Araan who scored, this time direct from a corner, which curled over the keeper and in at the far post.
Newmarket drew level again at the start of the second period from a long range shot, which bounced up off the hard ground and over the Tigers keeper. After this neither side was able to score again, although Burwell were pressing for the winner to the end.

Sawston United U9 |
W 3 - 4 |
Going into this game Sawston were top of the league with a perfect 100% record (9 wins out of 9) making this a daunting away trip for the Tigers.
Things certainly looked ominous when Sawston scored in the 3rd minute with their first attack but Burwell were playing well and were causing Sawston’s defence problems. In the 8th minute, a powerful shot by Harry Howe proved too much for the Sawston keeper and one minute later Adam Sutton latched onto a pass by Araan Derakhshan to give Tigers a surprising but deserved lead. Almost immediately Sawston drew level again only for Araan to restore the lead after a long clearance by Thomas Plowman. A fantastic first period ended 3-2 to Burwell. After the break Burwell continued to have the better of the game and Araan extended the lead further charging down a kick by the keeper to score his second.
Sawston battled back in the 3rd period to reduce the deficit to one goal, setting up an incredibly tense last 7.5 minutes. Both sides had chances to score and it took a great save by Thomas, followed by a goal-line block by Nathan Atkinson in the last minute to secure the win.
Given the excellent standard of the opposition, this was clearly the Tigers best performance of the season and demonstrated the level of play the team are capable of.

Panthers U9 |
L 1 - 3 |
Familiar opposition were next up for the Tigers in the shape of Moulton Panthers, who we narrowly beat twice last season in two excellent games.
Moulton, who included the leagues top scorer in their ranks, started very well and enjoyed the lion’s share of possession in the first period. Burwell defended excellently until the last minute of the period, when Moulton finally made the breakthrough from close range.
The second period continued in the same vein and the game was effectively killed off with two more Moulton goals in the space of 2 minutes, the first from the penalty spot. At this point things looked bleak but the Tigers gradually started to gain a foothold and create chances, resulting in a penalty and a fine finish in the bottom corner by Adam Powell.
From this point on, Burwell definitely edged the game and were very unlucky not to add to their tally even though Moulton were always dangerous on the break and struck the post.
This was another nearly game for the Tigers against a very strong team and despite the score-line, Tigers had more attempts on goal but couldn’t find the required end product. This was an exciting game with some pleasing battling performances throughout the game.

Burwell Tigers U9B |
W 5 - 3 |
After the weather decimated December, the two Tigers u-9 teams resumed the season against each other. If the last game was good, this one was closer and more exciting with the final result in doubt right up to the last minute.
Tigers B got off to a flyer, when Hannah Spray scored a goal after only 30 seconds and they kept hold of the lead for the rest of the period with some fine defending. Tigers A equalised at the start of the second period when captain Warren How fired home from long range but soon after Tigers B went 2-1 up when after a fast break Arran Tiwana produced a powerful finish from close range.
Just before the end of the period Adam Sutton intercepted a ball out of defence before finding the bottom corner of the net to make it 2-2.
It wasn’t until the last period when two more goals by Adam Sutton in just over a minute took Tigers A clear for the first time in the game. However, Tigers B continued to battle and they reduced the deficit to one and made for a tense finish when Arran Tiwana scored his second of the game from a tight angle. The outcome was finally settled in the last minute with a goal from Araan Derakhshan.

Burwell Tigers U9B |
W 0 - 2 |
This was the first ever meeting of the two U9 Tigers teams and Tigers B came into this game after giving a good performance away to unbeaten Sawston.
With local pride at stake this was always going to be a highly competitive game and so it turned out. All four periods of the game were hard fought with Tigers A ultimately emerging victorious with a narrow 2-0 win thanks to goals after 5 and 28 minutes.
The first goal was hooked in from close range by Araan Derakhshan from a corner by Irvin Galbraith. The second goal came when a defence splitting pass by Adam Sutton found Harry Howe in space and he produced a calm finish past the keeper.
There were a number of other chances for either side and Tigers B were unlucky on a few occasions, particularly from corners. The closing down and effort shown by all was a credit to both teams.

Shelford & Stapleford Strikers U9A |
L 3 - 5 |
Game 6 brought us another match against Shelford A. Shelford won all 20 games in our division last season and were once again unbeaten going into this match so this was always going to be a very tough match.
Shelford began strongly and took the lead from a corner after 5 minutes. Any thoughts that this game would be as one sided as those of last season were soon dispelled as Burwell battled back into the game and equalised in unorthodox fashion with a goal by Araan Derakhshan. Araan somehow scored whilst on his back facing away from goal, lifting the ball with both feet over his head and over the line.
Soon after Matthew Gooding played a pass to Adam Powell, who scored with a shot in off the foot of the post, to give Tigers a 2-1 lead at the end of the first period.
The second period was a very even end to end game, with the only goal coming when a goal-kick by Nathan Atkinson was flicked on in midfield, allowing Araan to control and shoot past the Shelford keeper.
The 3rd period saw the Shelford fight back and two goals within a minute brought the scores level going into the last period.
It was always going to be important to score the first goal in the 4th period and Shelford did so when a powerful long range shot could only be parried out and the ball was scrambled over the line. Mirroring the Newmarket C match, as Burwell tried to push forward Shelford managed to seal the win in the last minute with another well taken goal.
This was yet another exciting but frustrating game with some high quality football from both teams. For 30 minutes Tigers were excellent and probably played their best football of the season against a very good team. In the end Shelford once again proved to have the edge but the gap has clearly narrowed from last year.

Haverhill Rovers U9b |
L 4 - 3 |
F or the 5th game of the season a severely depleted Tigers squad headed back to Haverhill to take on the u9B team. Only 7 players were available for this fixture, comfortably beating the previous lowest turnout of 9 (v Milton last season).
On a bright clear morning Tigers started the game very well and the early domination was rewarded with 3 goals in the first 8 minutes of the game. Irvin opened the scoring in the 4th minute, lashing in a shot from the edge of the area. This was followed up by two strikes in a minute from Araan, one from the edge of the area and one from close range after a pinpoint pass by Adam Sutton. After the first period there was no indication that the result would end as it did.
The second period saw Tigers continue to hold the balance of possession but Haverhill started to look more comfortable at the back and more threatening up front. They pulled one back when Tigers were unable to clear their lines after a throw-in near the corner flag and then added a second when they scored direct from a corner near in the end of the half. Sandwiched between these goals was Tigers best move of the half, which saw Adam turn on the halfway line, beat a defender and then crash a long-range shot against the inside of the post which rebounded out to Araan, whose follow up was well saved by the keeper.
The remaining two periods were very similar to the second, both sides evenly matched but Haverhill managed to add a goal in each, whilst Tigers were unable to find there way past the home keeper.
So, a game that was both frustrating and exciting as the boys ran themselves into the ground on a very heavy, sticky pitch but clearly tired towards the end of the match. Credit has to be given to Haverhill, who recovered from the first period, were well organised and possessed a goal threat in their main striker, who scored a hat-trick.

Newmarket Town U9C |
L 2 - 4 |
For the fourth game of the season the Tigers welcomed the highest scoring team in the division to Margaret Field. Newmarket had scored 35 goals in their first 3 games and were clearly expected to provide a strong challenge and so it turned out.
Burwell started brightly creating a couple of good early chances only to fall behind in the 3rd minute to the visitor’s first real attack. Undaunted though Burwell continued to play some good football and after 7 minutes a quick throw by Adam Sutton found Nathan Atkinson in space and he lashed the ball high into the Newmarket goal from a very acute angle.
The first period was very evenly matched and so the game continued in the second. Once again Newmarket took the lead, from a fiercely crossed corner only for Nathan to equalise again, direct from a free-kick after Araan Derakhshan had been fouled following a powerful run down the opposition wing.
Burwell definitely edged the 3rd period and were extremely unfortunate not to score as both Araan and Adam Sutton hit the post and another goal bound effort was scrambled off the line. The fourth period was different though as Newmarket dominated possession and managed to take the lead again with 4 minutes to go. Then, as Burwell tried to push forward and equalise Newmarket sealed the win in the last minute with an excellent long range effort that hit the bar and bounced down over the line.
So, our unbeaten start to the season came to an end at the hands of a very good Newmarket team. This was an extremely even contest from start to finish and could quite easily have gone the other way had the chances been taken in the 3rd period.

Haverhill Rovers U9A |
W 1 - 11 |
Thanks to the vagaries of the FA fixtures computer, Tigers got to play a return match against Haverhill A only three weeks after the first meeting. Once again Burwell started powerfully and found themselves 4-0 up after only 9 minutes courtesy of goals from Harry Howe, Adam Sutton (after a superb long through ball by Nathan Atkinson), Araan Derakhshan and Irvin Galbraith. Araan added a second right before the end of the period to make it 5-0.
The start of the second period saw Haverhill fight back and score from close range after a corner before Burwell extended their lead again with three clinical strikes from Adam Powell, ably assisted by Adam Sutton, Archie Nunn and Nathan.
The last 15 minutes was much more competitive, as Haverhill battled hard to contain the Tigers forwards. Araan completed his hat-trick with the lone strike of the third period and then Harry, with a powerful finish from a cross, and Adam Powell rounded off the scoring in the last.
This was another good win for the Tigers with some fine goals and a strong team display.

Shelford & Stapleford Strikers U9B |
W 0 - 1 |
After the impressive opening win, Tigers had to travel to Shelford - the scene of our only away defeat last season. Once again the team began strongly and took the lead after 3 minutes, when after good approach play by Adam Powell and Adam Sutton, a cross into the area caused confusion in the Shelford defence and Harry Howe pounced to score his 5th goal of the season from close range. As the half wore on, any thoughts that there would be a repeat of the first match were soon banished as Shelford gradually started to dominate possession and it took some good saves by Thomas Plowman and defending by Warren How & Irvin Galbraith to preserve the lead.
In the 2nd period with the wind behind them Shelford continued to control the majority of the game and Burwell required two excellent saves from Matthew Gooding and plenty of good work from in defence from Nathan Atkinson, Jack Peck, Archie Nunn, Araan Derakhshan and Thomas.
The 3rd period produced very few chances at either end with Tigers more comfortable but reduced to long range strikes and the occasional corner. The final 7.5 minutes seemed to go on forever, as Shelford threw everything into trying to equalise, hitting the post and bar, whilst Burwell defended the lead resolutely.
The relief at the final whistle amongst the excellent travelling support was tangible, as despite scoring less than 2 goals for the first time, Tigers held on for an incredible win against a very strong team. This was an unusual match at this level with so few goals - but a marvellous team effort where everyone in the squad contributed maximum effort.

haverhill Rovers U9A |
W 12 - 1 |
For the first game of the new season, a full Tigers squad entertained Haverhill U9A and took only 2 minutes to open the scoring with Adam Sutton setting up Adam Powell for a neat finish. Harry Howe doubled the lead soon after, latching on to a long ball by Warren How and then Adam Sutton added a third from a direct free-kick. Despite this early salvo, Haverhill kept battling and after a spell of pressure managed to pull a goal back to make it 3-1 after a competitive first 15 minutes.
The second period saw Burwell regain their dominance and they extended the lead with Jack Peck’s first goal for the club followed by two fine long range efforts from Nathan Atkinson, the first of which came from a quickly taken short corner.
Adam Powell and Irvin Galbraith both latched onto saved shots and hammered home the rebounds to add two more goals in the third period to make it 8-1. In the last period with Haverhill clearly tiring Tigers were able to score four more excellent goals, with Harry getting 3 more, including one strong run and powerful finish starting from the halfway line and Adam Powell another one to complete his hat-trick.
So, all in all, a fine start to the season with six different scorers and some very encouraging passing and movement and good defending against a spirited Haverhill team.
RESULT: 1.0
